Before
...and...
After!
I am happy to say my husband loved it! I combined two recipes to make this. For the crust, I used a simple Betty Crocker recipe - flour, salt, shortening, and a little water. You can find it here.
For the filling, I used this recipe from Broma Bakery. It calls for Granny Smith apples, so while I am a big fan of Macintosh and Cortland apples, I went with the Granny Smith and it is definitely the way to go! The reason is that this recipe has a not-so-secret ingredient- maple caramel! The sweetness of the caramel balances out the tartness of the Granny Smith apples. Sweeter apples would probably be too sweet when combined with the caramel.
The caramel was actually really easy to make, and I LOVE maple syrup (I am picky about maple syrup the way my husband is picky about his coffee!) The maple caramel recipe is also from Broma Bakery, here. After mixing the apples and spices and putting them into the pie crust, I drizzled the maple caramel over the apples before putting on the lattice on top. Egg wash and some turbinado sugar (essentially just a fancy name for raw sugar) to finish it off!
I also made a roasted chicken with roasted root vegetables for dinner- a recipe post for that coming soon!
What are some of your favorite fall recipes?
Hot Coffee!! :)
